Kesimpulan tersebut dihasilkan oleh para peneliti dari Turki yang melakukan survei kepada 264 pria dan wanita mengenai kebiasaan tidur dan mimpi yang dialami. Hasilnya, mereka yang sering terjaga sampai larut malam dan sulit bangun di pagi hari memiliki frekuensi mimpi buruk 70 persen lebih tinggi dibanding dengan orang yang tidur cukup dan bangun pagi.
Para peneliti juga menemukan orang yang hobi begadang itu lebih sulit untuk melanjutkan tidur setelah terbangun dari mimpi buruknya dibanding dengan "si morning person" atau orang yang suka bangun pagi.
Lantas mengapa begadang menyebabkan mimpi buruk? Para peneliti belum mengetahui dengan jelas, namun dugaan terbesar adalah karena stres.
"Orang yang sering begadang akan memiliki kadar hormon stres yang tinggi yang mengacaukan cara otak menyimpan memori selama fase tidur REM. Hal itu akan menyebabkan otak menafsirkan memori sebagai mimpi yang menakutkan," kata Yavuz Selvi, peneliti dari Universitas Arizona.
Untuk mempercepat mata terpejam, sangat disarankan agar Anda meluangkan waktu untuk rileks beberapa waktu sebelum naik ke tempat tidur. Hindari melakukan kegiatan lain selain tidur dan berhubungan seks di kamar tidur agar otak mengasosiasikan kamar tidur dengan kegiatan tidur.
